Food and atmosphere at Tor’s Camp

At Tor’s Camp, mealtimes are relaxed, generous and personal. The camp is small and welcoming, and dinner can feel a little like being invited to a relative’s home: a thoughtfully prepared meal, a warm welcome and time to share stories from the day.

Everything is cooked in camp by our experienced chefs, including fresh breads. Each evening brings a set three-course dinner, with meat and vegetarian mains available. The cooking takes inspiration from different parts of the world, bringing together Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours with familiar, comforting dishes. Fresh ingredients, colourful salads, homemade breads and carefully prepared sauces run through the menus.

Lunch is lighter and easy-going, whether you enjoy it back in camp or out on a game drive. You might find falafel with homemade pita and tzatziki, or a fresh bowl of rice with crispy tofu, roasted vegetables and carrot-and-ginger dressing. If you would prefer meat, chicken options can be arranged.

Dinner, made in camp

Evenings often begin with drinks by the fire. The bar team can pour a glass of wine, mix a gin and tonic or serve a beer or whisky while the light fades and the camp settles into its warm, low-lit rhythm.

Dinner is usually served around 7:30 or 8:00 p.m., though the timing is flexible. A three-course meal might begin with roasted butternut squash soup and warm homemade rolls, followed by a main such as Javanese pulled chicken or grilled cauliflower steaks with roasted vegetables. Vegetarian guests have considered alternatives throughout the menu, from palak paneer with naan to lentil lasagne. Desserts range from chocolate brownie with warm chocolate sauce to key lime pie or lemon posset.

The exact dishes vary, but the feeling stays the same: a generous, freshly prepared meal served at an unhurried pace. Meals can be shared with other guests or the camp hosts, making dinner a chance to get to know one another and trade stories from the day. When the setting allows, we may take dinner outside for a bush meal beneath the Mara sky.

Breakfast on the plains

Most mornings start early, with a game drive as the sun rises over the savannah. Breakfast comes with you: your guide finds a scenic spot, and sets out a full picnic meal in the bush. It is a chance to pause, enjoy fresh coffee and take in the landscape before continuing your drive.

Lunch can be served out on the plains or back in camp, depending on the day. After an afternoon to relax, shower or watch the hippos by the river, you can head out again before returning for drinks and dinner.

Warm, relaxed and a little wild

Tor’s Camp is comfortable and homely, but unmistakably a safari camp. Candlelight and the fire make the evenings feel intimate; beyond them, the Mara carries on. You may hear hyenas calling or hippos feeding nearby while you sit at the table.

Our chefs are happy to plan for dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free meals. Please let us know in advance so we can discuss your needs and prepare accordingly.

At Tor’s Camp, good food is part of feeling at home in the wild: fresh meals made with care, a welcoming table and evenings shaped by the quiet sounds of the reserve.
